Tinnitus Relief
Those of us that suffer with the intrusion of ringing in the ears will know that the condition is at its worst
when there is no other external noise to dilute the sounds of
tinnitus that we are hearing in our heads. It almost goes without saying then that one of the
times that ear ringing is most intrusive is during the night when you are trying to sleep. As has already been
pointed out, when there is nothing else to divert attention from the tinnitus noise within then it appears to
become louder. The louder it gets the more focus it demands. There goes that vicious circle again.
One way of gaining some tinnitus relief is with the use of tinnitus maskers. The concept is a simple one. The fact that you experience unwanted ringing
ears or indeed any other perceived noise in the ears during quiet times is turned on its head. This is done by
utilising another sound that is recognised by the brain as being friendly fire to drown out the unwanted and
unfriendly internal noises.
Tinnitus maskers have been in use since the mid 1970’s. They include a number of different
devices designed to deliver the alternative and friendly sounds to the tinnitus patient. The brain has an
ability to discriminate between sounds that represent a threat and those that do not. We all have spent time in
situations where there has been an intrusive noise such as perhaps the sound of a nearby railway. Over a period
of time we become so used to the sound we no longer notice it. That is not to say we don’t hear it. The brain
filters out the sound as it recognises it is not important to our situation.
Popular among tinnitus maskers is one that fits in the ear and is not unlike an earplug in appearance.
Commonly called a tinnitus white noise machine this little battery operated device emits a gentle volume
controllable rushing sound. The brain recognises this as a friendly sound and one that can be turned off at
will. Because it is recognised in this way the brain gradually tunes in to this sound at the expense of the
sounds of tinnitus. Although not cheap to buy these tinnitus maskers can be very effective although, as with all remedies for tinnitus the fact
that a tinnitus white noise machine is of benefit to one sufferer is no guarantee of its success for
another.
Perhaps not surprisingly a standard hearing aid can often provide some tinnitus relief. Its use goes some way to
regaining any lost hearing ability and thereby improving the heard sound to perceived sound balance. These can be
even more effective if they have one of the tinnitus maskers incorporated within them. These devises are really quite sophisticated and
use man made sounds that have been extensively laboratory researched to deliver the desired result.
Other tinnitus maskers that are popular use natural sounds such as ocean waves or rainfall. These
are often in the form of audio tapes played on a loop and are very popular with insomniacs and people having
difficulty sleeping in a quiet room. Advanced software programmes are also available taking this form of
tinnitus treatment to a higher level by combining natural sounds with synthetic or manmade sounds.
So some tinnitus relief can be found for many sufferers using tinnitus maskers. My own experience with using one of these was that it did take some getting
used to and I did suffer with sore ears at first from wearing them. But I can say that I had some success and
that I consider that it was a worthwhile experience towards my ultimate tinnitus liberation.
